Dental Emergencies Happen – Be Ready
When immediate professional help is essential for saving a tooth, or there is bleeding or extreme pain, you have a dental emergency on your hands. Keeping your teeth healthy by visiting your dentist for regular checkups can prevent many emergencies, but sometimes accidents happen. Whether you’re at home or traveling, knowing what to do in the first 30 minutes after an incident can save your tooth. Always keep your dentist’s after-hours contact information on hand, and remember the following tips for handling any kind of common dental emergency.
If your tooth is completely removed from its socket, you must act quickly to save it. Rinse the tooth in water, and attempt to place it back into the socket. If this isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk. Call your emergency dentist immediately for instructions.
Loose or Misaligned Tooth
Gently try to move the tooth back into position using your finger. Don’t force it. Contact your dentist for emergency dental services.
Cracks, Chips, and Fractures
Cracks and chips that don’t cause pain are usually not an emergency, but a fractured tooth may be serious. Rinse with warm water, and apply a cold compress if swelling is present. Make an emergency appointment with your dentist. If you are in pain, take acetaminophen. Avoid using aspirin or topical treatments like Orajel, which can burn sensitive gum tissues.
Soft Tissue Injury
Puncture wounds, tears, and lacerations to the cheeks, lips, or tongue can be serious. Clean the area with lukewarm water. Place pressure on the wound if it is bleeding. Call your oral surgeon, or visit a hospital emergency room immediately. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen as these can increase bleeding.
When to See an Emergency Dentist
In general, if any of the following occurs, it is time to seek emergency dental services.
- Mouth bleeding
- Severe pain
- Bulges or knots on gum tissue
- Trauma to the teeth, mouth or face
- Loose teeth
