When and How to Introduce Your Child to Flossing

Proper oral hygiene is essential for your children’s lifelong dental health. To instill good dental care habits, start them flossing early. You can begin by introducing floss while they still have their baby teeth. You’ll need to provide assistance at first, but by the age of ten, most children can floss without help. Flossing daily is especially important when teeth begin to grow closer together. If you teach your children about the importance of good dental health while their primary teeth are in place, flossing will already be a regular habit by the time their permanent teeth erupt.

Teaching Your Children How to Floss

Start by choosing a soft and flexible dental floss. It shouldn’t cause any damage to your child’s teeth or irritate the gums. In the early training stages of proper dental care, tying the floss into small circles to fit over the child’s fingers can help to ensure a good grip.

When your child learns to hold the floss correctly, you can begin teaching him or her the following steps. Remove approximately 18 inches of floss, and wrap it loosely around each of your child’s middle fingers. Leave about one inch of floss between them. Show your child how to slide the floss gently between teeth while holding it taut with a thumb and index finger. Avoid snapping the floss down onto gums. Next, have your child form a C-shaped curve with the floss and move it gently up and down between each tooth and under the gum line. When it’s time to move to the next tooth, use a new section of floss.

If bleeding occurs while flossing, don’t be alarmed. This common problem should resolve itself within a few days as gums become healthier. If bleeding persists or gums become red, swollen, or painful, make an appointment with your child’s dentist in East Detroit.
