The ADA Sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month in February
Millions of Americans are affected by tooth decay each year. While rates of tooth decay have declined in recent years, rates remain high among young children and teens. In fact, more than 40 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 11 have had at least one cavity in their primary teeth, while an estimated 66 percent of teens have had a cavity in at least one of their permanent teeth. To combat the high rates of tooth decay among the younger population, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) every February, hoping to raise awareness about the importance of oral health in children.
National Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month
The ADA began the National Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month (NCDHM) in 1941 as a single-day event to bring awareness to millions of Americans of the importance of proper dental care. In 1981, it became a month-long awareness campaign held each February.
To ensure that children learn good dental care habits that will last for a lifetime, awareness and education must begin early. This includes proper brushing and flossing techniques, and scheduling visits with family dentistry practitioners every six months. Parents should begin instilling good dental care habits in their children even before their first tooth has emerged.
National Children’s Dental Health Awareness Month was developed by the ADA to help parents, teachers, and dental care experts deliver the message of proper dental care to children by creating exciting events and engaging activities. The program offers online resources, including booklets, videos, planning guides to assist with dental health presentations.
This year, the NCDHM campaign’s slogan is, “Join the super smile team.” Its featured characters are the McGrinn twins, Flossy and Bucky, and their friends, Den and Gen Smiley and their dog, K-9. Together, these dental care superheroes fight for a winning smile.
Give Kids a Smile Day
Among the events that promote awareness of good oral hygiene is Give Kids a Smile Day, started in 2003 to help dentistry professionals reach out and offer dental services to underprivileged children in their communities. Dental care professionals volunteer their services to assist young children who would not otherwise have access to screenings, treatments, and dental care education. Although Give Kids a Smile Day began as a single-day event during February, today it serves U.S. cities year-round. Every year, the nationwide program is one of more than 1500 events served by 40,000 volunteers who benefit more than 450,000 children.
