Parents with Dental Fear May Pass it On to Their Kids
In conjunction with National Anxiety Month in April, Delta Dental Plans has released a nationwide survey concerning dental fear. Although some parents may believe their children were born with a natural fear of dentist appointments, the study suggests this is not the case. It revealed that the number of parents who report being afraid of the dentist correlates perfectly with the number of kids who share the same anxiety. Children are impressionable and easily pick up on a parent’s dental fear and worry. It’s important for parents to remain calm during dental check-ups, and only talk about the dentist using positive terms.
Fear of Dentist: Why Kids Are Scared, and How to Help
Routine dental check-ups are essential for maintaining good oral health, but at least 40 percent of children have some degree of dental phobia that makes their dental visits scary and uncomfortable. Parents polled by Delta Dental reported that the threat of pain is the most common source of dental fear among kids. Not liking the dentist and needing additional dental work were among the lesser fears. To help allay dental fear, parents should start exposing their kids to dental care early, so they can build relationships with their dentists. A baby’s first dental appointment should be made no later than his or her first birthday. Informing the dentist of a child’s anxiety before the visit and playing dentist at home can also help lessen stress.
Managing Dental Fear in Adults
Parents can reduce the chances of passing along their fear of dentist appointments by managing their own anxiety. Talking to the dentist about dental phobia or seeking a dentist who specializes in treating anxious patients can be helpful. Other ways to reduce dental fear include making early morning appointments, taking a friend to dental visits, and listening to music, television, or podcasts during treatment. For advanced cases of adult dental phobia, sedation dentistry or cognitive behavioral therapy may be required.
